For over 130 years, the Yale Daily News has been the primary source of news and debate on campus. It is the oldest college daily newspaper in the United States and is editorially and financially independent. Many YDN writers, editors, and contributors have gone on to significant careers in journalism and public life. Some of the most notable include William F. Buckley, Lan Samantha Chang, John Hersey, Joseph Lieberman, Sargent Shriver, Strobe Talbott, and Calvin Trillin. The YDN is also proud to have a number of outstanding alumni in the fields of politics, entertainment and business who serve on its board of directors.
Each day’s edition is packed with live coverage from the nation and the world. In addition to New York-based national and international headlines, readers will find in-depth local stories, exclusive sports coverage of the Yankees, Mets, Giants, and Jets, politics, celebrity gossip, classified ads, and more. The award-winning team of writers, columnists, and opinion formers brings the best to you every day.
The News is also committed to bringing you coverage of under-reported and under-served communities, including those in poverty, incarceration, mental illness, and homelessness. YDN journalists travel across the country and around the globe to report on these issues.
In addition to reporting on current events, the YDN also produces a weekly opinion section, sports page, and special issues each year such as the Yale-Harvard Game Issue and the Commencement Issue. The YDN is proud to partner with campus organizations and student groups to produce these special issues and to highlight the work of underrepresented students, faculty, staff, and alumni.
The YDN Historical Archive provides access to digitized copies of printed issues of the YDN from 1878 through 1995. This online archive is open to the world and features a simple user interface. The digitized versions of the YDN were scanned from the original print volumes held by the Yale Library and are available for free download. YDN staff and the Yale community have continued to work to make this collection accessible online and expand its scope to cover as much of the paper’s 140-year history as possible. The YDN Historical Archive is made possible by an anonymous gift from a Yale alumnus. This generous gift facilitated the migration of the Archive to its current online platform and will help sustain the Archive into the future.
