The Daily News

Daily News

Founded in 1919, Daily News was the first tabloid newspaper published in the United States. It was originally owned by the Tribune Company until it was purchased by tronc in 2017. The New York City-based paper is the fourth most widely circulated daily newspaper in the United States. Its editorial stance is moderate-to-liberal and it is frequently contrasted with the more conservative New York Post.

In addition to its news coverage, the News features an array of entertainment and celebrity gossip and sports stories. It is also known for its large and prominent photographs, classified ads, comics, a Sunday edition, and an opinion section. In the early years of its history, the News attracted readers with sensational coverage of crime and scandal, lurid photographs, and political and social commentary. The News was often in a circulation battle with its rival, the New York Post, but it remained one of the largest newspapers in the country throughout the first half of the 20th century.

The Daily News once had local bureaus in the Bronx, Brooklyn and Queens, but these have since been closed. Its borough editions are now printed in Long Island. The News once had radio and television stations as well, including WPIX, whose call letters were derived from the newspaper’s nickname. The News later sold its television and radio properties, but the newspaper’s original building on 42nd Street (now Manhattan West) remains an official city landmark.

A former newspaper columnist once wrote, “The only thing more popular than a dead baby is a living one.” That comment underscores the appeal of the tabloid format and its ability to grab attention with outrageous headlines.

Although the News lost its lead in circulation to its rival, the Post, in the mid-20th century, it still retained a loyal readership. A major reason for this was its intense and comprehensive local news coverage, which is unparalleled by other metropolitan newspapers. The News is known for its screamer headlines, such as the 1975 screamer, “Ford to City: Drop Dead!”

Today the Daily News is a multimedia brand with multiple websites and apps. The newspaper itself is printed from Monday through Saturday, with a supplement on Friday. Its website has a variety of features, including live streaming of many events. The News also offers a digital subscription service that provides access to its articles on a desktop computer and on a mobile device. In addition, subscribers can download the entire newspaper for offline reading. Lastly, the app provides access to the Daily News podcast, a feature that allows users to listen to articles as they read them. Subscribers can also share stories with friends through email. All of this makes the Daily News a valuable source of news and information about New York City and beyond. The News also maintains a YouTube channel and has an active Instagram account. Its Twitter feed is full of news and entertainment updates. Its Facebook page is another great way to keep up with the latest in New York.
