The word entertainment is derived from the medieval Latin inter tenere, from the prefix inter meaning “inside” and the suffix tenere, which means to hold or keep inside. It also has Indo-European roots, including ten, which means to stretch.

Generally, the term is associated with amusement and fun, but it can be used to refer to ceremonies, celebrations, religious festivals, or even satire. Entertaiment is able to be adapted to any scale or medium, from an individual selecting their own private entertainment from the enormous array of pre-recorded products available, to performances intended for thousands.
